If it has not been possible for you to spend time with the person who has died immediately after their death, perhaps because you live too far away to get to the hospital quickly, it is often possible for you to visit them in the hospital mortuary viewing room.
This is sometimes referred to as the chapel of rest. You will not normally have to see someone as often depicted on TV being pulled out of a cabinet on a trolley.
It is usually best to have a fairly short visit at this stage as most hospitals only have one room for this purpose. Most funeral directors will be able to offer you much more generous periods of time with the person who has died once they are caring for the deceased person.
Often this will also be much closer to where you live.
