Many people believe that if you register the death you also have to arrange and pay for the funeral. Unfortunately many professionals also believe this. It is not true but you should try not to register the death under the category of Informant which is arranging the funeral (see Who can register the death?) if you think there may be a problem with having enough money for the funeral.
Often you will have registered the death before you have found out whether or not there is any money, because you need the Death certificates from the Registrar (unless you have a Coroner’s certificate) to prove the fact of the death to banks, building societies and life insurance companies.
If you have already registered stating that you will be arranging the funeral, do not worry. You are still able to pass the responsibility on to someone else.
