Help with funeral costs

Help with funeral costs

Whether a bereavement is expected or sudden, you may find there are many questions you need support with, and that can include how the funeral will be paid for. The information below explains some of the financial support that may be available to help.

There are many options available to you when arranging a funeral, and our team can support you in navigating the different types of funeral on offer. If you would like to talk through your choices, please do get in touch.

Government support for funeral costs

If you feel you need guidance in understanding what financial assistance may be available to you, the UK government provides support to individuals.

This depends on your personal circumstances, and the GOV.UK website is very informative.

There you will find key information covering a range of benefits. These include the Bereavement Support Payment, Guardian’s Allowance, and how a bereavement may affect Universal Credit, to name just a few.

If you are responsible for arranging a funeral and you receive certain benefits, you may be able to claim a Funeral Expenses Payment to help with some of the costs.

This can go towards expenses such as burial or cremation fees and some travel costs.

Eligibility depends on your circumstances and the benefits you receive. If you live in Scotland, the equivalent support is called Funeral Support Payment.

Support for those on a low income

Sometimes, when sorting through paperwork, it is not  obvious that funeral costs can be covered by insurance policies or other forms of savings, which can be distressing.

Down to Earth is a charity that supports individuals who are on a low income, and it can help if the funeral has not yet taken place.

We would encourage you to call them on 020 8983 5055 to discuss your individual circumstances.

Who is responsible for paying for a funeral?

Funeral costs are usually paid from the estate of the person who has died. If you arrange the funeral, you may be responsible for the cost in the first instance, although this can often be reclaimed from the estate.

Where there is a prepaid funeral plan, life insurance or savings set aside, these may cover some or all of the cost.

If you are struggling to meet the cost of a funeral, you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the government if you receive qualifying benefits.

Charities such as Down to Earth can also offer guidance and support. If no one is able to arrange or pay for a funeral, the local council may arrange a public health funeral.

You may be able to get help through the Funeral Expenses Payment, or the Funeral Support Payment in Scotland, if you are on a low income and receive certain benefits.

The amount you receive depends on your circumstances. Full details and eligibility criteria are available on GOV.UK.
